The Baccalaureate School for Global Education (BSGE) is a New York City public high school located in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. BSGE was established in 2002. It serves a student body of about 470 students between the 7th and 12th grades. BSGE is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer both the MYP (IB Middle Years Programme) and also the IB Diploma Programme. It was ranked #28th in the nation as of 2015, and ranked the #5th High School in the New York. Applicants must succeed in an admission test, and satisfy other requirements according to the grade entered.

As of the 2014-15 school year, the school had an enrollment of 476 students and 26.7 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 17.8:1. There were 149 students (31.3% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 54 (11.3% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Admissions

All applicants must be residents of New York City, although priority is given to those in Queens County. Every year, BSGE hosts two Open-House evenings. For 7th grade admissions, applicants must take an entrance exam. Additionally, letters of recommendations are required. After the test, the school chooses students that passed the test and these students will receive an interview letter. Students receive admissions decisions approximately a few months later. For 9th grade admissions, middle school grades are examined. Student also may choose which language they would like to study (Spanish, French, or Mandarin) after acceptance, though the school only uses this as a recommendation. The admission of 9th grade acceptance are less than 10% of the applicants. Where certain criteria includes a 90-100 grade for each main subject (science, math, ELA, and Social studies). Along with 3-4.5 on each standarlized test scores, and attendance.

Traditions

Winter Concert: BSGE holds an annual Winter Concert. The money collected from the Winter Concert are donated to many community funds.

Day of Silence:A day in which students take a pledge to remain silent in order to support the LGBT community.

Senior Exhibition: Seniors display their artwork from their time in school. The exhibit displays work created during the two-year course IB Visual Arts HL, which requires students to research art history, and document progress in the art creating process.

Clubs: There are various student-run clubs held after school hours. Clubs include the BaccRag Newspaper Club, the Dodgeball Club, the Sexuality and Gender Acceptance Club, the BSGE Business Club, Math Club, Model UN, After-School fitness, Basketball, Chess, Creative Writing, Dance, Civic Debate Club, Girls Softball, Global Action Project, Instrumental Music, Student Council, Library and Laptop Access for Research and Homework, Math, Musical Theater, Peer Tutoring, Robotics, Subject Tutoring, Table Tennis, Visual Art, Yoga, MOUSE Squad, Photography and other countless clubs.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP)

BSGE offers the IB diploma in the eleventh and twelfth grades, with challenging courses offered from grades seven to ten as preparation. As of October 2017, BSGE offers English Literature, Visual Arts, and History of the Americas as two-year Higher Level (HL) courses, as well as French, Mandarin, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Math Studies as Standard Level (SL) courses. Classes are combined with the Extended Essay, a college-level 16 page research paper, and an epistemological philosophy class Theory of Knowledge (TOK). Students must accumulate a certain number of points through exam grades, TOK, and the extended essay to be rewarded the IB diploma. In BSGE Class of 2017, 92% of the students were rewarded the IB diploma, a new record rate.
